    The magnitude and effects of violence against elderly women in Ilala District, Dar es Salaam

    This study aimed at identifying the magnitude and impacts of violence against elder women within the society in order to understand their effects to the community and strategies that to be used to reduce them. The main objective of the study was to examine magnitude and effects of violence against elderly women within the society in Ilala District. Specifically, the study focused on determining the magnitude of violence against elderly women; identifying the forms of violence which include psychological and social effects of violence on the affected person and family living with elder people. This study used both Qualitative and Quantitative. The study comes up with findings which indicate that, the most notable types of violence against elderly women and those people living with them in Ilala District includes gender based violence, psychological violence, physical violence, social violence and economic violence. As note from the findings, most effects of violence against elderly women include psychological and social. This report demonstrates that, violence against women is pervasive and that it is a major contributing factor to difficult life for women. Again, there is a problem in reporting in time the violence within the community. Reasons for reluctance in reporting are due to cultural, social and family pressures. In Ilala District 70 violations against elderly people were reported per month in 2013. Among those cases reported 48 were women and 22 were men. Most of them were sexually abused about 45 percent, psychological violations were about 26 percent and financial violations were II percent while 18 percent were other forms of violence. Despite all the government effort of finding some ways of reducing violence, the violence against elder women still remains a challenge to many families within the Tanzanian communities. In concluding, these findings send a powerful message that, violence against women is not a small problem that only occurs in some locations of society, but rather is a global public problem which requiring urgent action.
