Abstract
Efforts to increase food production and bring about economic empowerment should not adversely affect public health and the environment. Strategies geared towards increasing farmers’ capacity to farm sustainably and productively can greatly enhance both public health and profits. In rural communities in Tanzania, poor pesticide management and hazardous practices are common due to a lack of capacity, economic empowerment, and untrained and uninformed farmers. To improve the health of the Lake Eyasi Basin community, we embarked on a project that aimed at empowering farmers to monitor pesticides health impacts on themselves and the community in general through a community-based surveillance and make decisions that will contribute to the sustainable reduction of the risks of pesticides. The outcome of a three months implementation (April – June 2010) of the project will be shared in this paper.
