Abstract
This study assessed the factors associated with adherence to methadone treatment among drug users enrolled at Mwananyamala hospital in Kinondoni district. The study focused on determination of methadone adherence rates among drug users enrolled at Mwananyamala hospital in Kinondoni. Also, the study explored participants' knowledge and attitude on the provision of methadone treatment. Lastly, the study explored factors associated with the success or hindrances to methadone treatment among drug users enrolled at Mwananyamala hospital. This study was hospital based descriptive cross-sectional survey using quantitative and qualitative methods to answer the research questions. In this study systematic random sampling technique were used to obtain study participants. Participants were selected from the enrolment register at the hospital, from the first number with interval of four participants. The total number of 250 respondents was involved in a study. The data collected were analyzed by usings PSs software and the results are presented in tables, charts and graphs. Results showed that society and drug users themselves have insufficient knowledge concerning methadone maintenance treatments; suggesting that education should be provided before treatments, during treatments and after treatments. Also, study revealed that most of drug users have positive attitude towards methadone treatment despite of their poor adherence rate.
