Abstract
In the context of an alarming increase in the magnitude of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Zanzibar, the prevailing attitude and practices of diabetics assume immense importance in the control of the disease.
Methods: This cross sectional study describes the knowledge, attitude and practices regarding lifestyle modification (KAP) among 208 patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus attending Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, Zanzibar, a part of United Republic of Tanzania. A selfadministeredinterview using a structured questionnaire was carried out for data collection. Socio-demographic characteristics of the participants were determined and the recently blood glucose levels were obtained from the patients files. The Knowledge, attitude and practice of participants were assessed.
Results : The study revealed good knowledge regarding symptoms (e.g frequent hunger and thirst was answered correctly by 88% of the participants, frequent urination by 89%)and complications (e.ghigh blood pressure = 77.4%, blindness 66.3%). However only 46% had gone for eye examination during the last I year of their treatment. Protective measures on detecting early complications of diabetes like periodic eye examination (47%),regular blood sugar monitoring (57%) were not much satisfactory. Attitude toward regular exercise and dietary modification in diabetics was found to be favourable in the majority.
Conclusion: Diabetic patients showed good knowledge, positive attitude and good practices theoretically but in reality is not, this is evidenced by the fasting blood sugar test results which statistically revealed high percentage ( 80.9%)(Table 4) of high blood sugar levels during the study period. This is to say promotion of healthy lifestyle modification and self care should be incorporated and enhanced as part of diabetes education.
