The study was conducted in Ludewa Ward, Ludewa District, with the aim of exploring challenges faced by orphans in primary schools. The study used qualitative techniques of data collection and analysis, in which sixteen respondents were selected. The respondents comprised of guardians of the orphans, and local leaders of the eight streets in Ludewa Ward. Specifically, the study dealt with determining challenges that affect school performance of orphans in primary schools, identifying the coping strategies of primary school orphans to life challenges and to assessing ways of boosting academic performance of the orphans. The study noted that main challenges that affect performance of orphans in primary schools were lack of time for reading at home due to several domestic chores given to them, poor school attendance, lack of school requirements and learning materials as well as grief of losing their parents. The primary sources of the mentioned challenges were too much work at home, diseases, low family income, lack of social support from relatives, malnutrition, inadequate government support, unawareness of available assistances, misunderstanding within the family and lack of proper guidance from their guardians. The study recommends that all relatives should take part in supporting orphans socially and economically, they should not leave the burden to only one person. The study also suggests that the government must play its part to promote and reinforce laws and policies that support the orphans and their care givers in all aspects of life, whereas human rights activists should use the mass media to bring awareness of the existence of orphans in the society.en_US
