Abstract
This study is about examining the psychosocial challenges and coping strategies among persons with albinism in Tanzania. It was conducted in Kinondoni Municipality. The general objective of this study focuses on identifying the psychosocial challenges and the coping strategies among Person with Albinism in Tanzania. The specific objectives based on attitudes and beliefs, challenges and coping strategies being employed by people with albinism. Study adopts quantitative and qualitative method for data collection from Tanzania Association of Albinism, Traditional Healer Association, Social workers. Parents and guardians who have children with albinism and People with Albinism through Self-administered questionnaires. The study revealed the community attitudes and belief towards the people with albinism to be complicated despite of the big campaigns done. Thus, negative attitudes and misconception prevailing in the society has been propelling to the psychosocial challenges. The identified challenges involve ranges from social and emotional aspects. These include Albinism killings with superstitious beliefs, having superstitious power and social interactions. People with Albinism still face many psychosocial challenges in their daily life resulted from environmental and social factors which include negative attitudes and perception towards Albinism. These increased many psychosocial challenges which they fail to cope with developed strategies. It is recommended the need of strategic efforts in education provision to raise Albinism awareness in the society so as to eradicate negative attitudes and misconceptions. The state should integrate albinism awareness in the school curriculum and train more psychosocial counseling professionals and frequent policy reviews are important to safeguard people with Albinism.
